Hitler vs Churchill

Firstly, both are great leaders. They know what they want and they know where they go in order to rule the country.

Both are using persuasive speech. They were strict while delivering their speech and they were loud.

The use of ‘I’ shows the superiority of themselves and the dictatorship that they practiced. They don’t want to share their power with anyone else.

The speech continues with the use of ‘we’ to persuade people to join them. This shows that they can be strict, but at the same time they are just human. They want company and they want followers. This is a good move for them

They were very confident of themselves. There were no pause while Hitler spoke. This is how a great leader should be.

Both leaders are in the same shoes. They condemned their enemies. Churchill condemned Belgium and Hitler with his England thingy. When we know what we do, we are on the right track, just like both leaders. They know their enemies and they persuade people to be on their shoes as well in order to get support from them.

Conclusions, both are great leaders. They leave us with nothing but awe-aspiring speeches. We can learn something from it. They are persuasive and they know what they are doing.

Pow! It's Firework, peeps!

Sometimes, songs can inspire people. There are many songs we can choose as our inspirational song. As for example, Michael Jackson’s songs, most of his songs are about humanity and these kinds of songs really inspire people to move on in their life and change for good. Black Eyed Peas for example, is popular because their songs are about humanity, about love. The title of ‘Where is the Love’ has made them famous and this is one of the examples why songs are important in our life. After all, we listen to the songs almost everyday, no matter what genre.

As for my group, we have chosen Katy Perry’s song entitled ‘Firework’. This song is about expressing yourself to the world. The lyrics are so meaningful and really suit us. We have to be true to ourselves, and not pretending to others. The excerpt from the lyric for example ‘you're original, cannot be replaced’, indicates that everyone in this world is special. We are who we are. There are no other people who behave exactly like us. Thus, we have to be proud of ourselves and show to the world.

The title itself shows that the variety of people in this world. Firework has many colours so do the human being. We have different attitude and behaviour. So, the firework does show something. It tells us that we are different from each other, and the difference has made us become more unique and different from the others. The lyric of ‘Come on, let your colors burst’, shows that we have to let ourselves shine and burst the colour. Show your attitude to the world and be confident of yourself. Do not depend on others because you can do it, too!

So, this song is very suitable to all people in this world. We have to be confident of ourselves and be honest. People with good attitude are appreciated and they will survive in this challenging world. In short, Katy Perry has delivered this song beautifully and the lyrics are so meaningful.

Smile! It's Mona Lisa!

Mona Lisa Smile is an average movie for me. I don’t hate it but I don’t like it much either. I think the movie is kinda boring for me. It’s too formal and the story line is flat I would say. But I don’t deny I love to see Julia Roberts in this movie that acted as Katherine, the new teacher in town.

Katherine tried all her best to teach the students there. At first, the students don’t like her because she is new. However, one day, Katherine tests them with something they don’t know and because of that, the students realized that Katherine is not an ordinary teacher they had before.

I salute Katherine’s determination to change the students into something good. This is a good example to be followed because not all teachers have this courage to change for good. She tried her best eventhough she was hated at the first time.

I think most of the teachers in any school in Malaysia should act how Katherine acts. She is very good in delivering her own way of teaching and not afraid of trying something new. She’s very determined and in the end of the movie, all of her students don’t want her to go because she has become an important element in the students’ life.

The ending of this movie is so-so only. I don’t like it because it doesn’t wrap what’s in the movie. It’s like hanging.

One thing I noticed in this move is the great determination lead into successful life. Katherine is a great example for me to be a great teacher one day. She determines to teach her students in any ways she could.

Lean on Me

Lean on Me is a great movie. It motivates me to be a good teacher in the future. We don’t have to be so rigid in order to change people, we have to be creative. Plus, the right way to change people is from within, not from any force. We might be strict, but it’s a good sign so that students will respect us.

Lean on Me is based on the true story of Joe Clark, a man singularly responsible for turning a rough high school (and boy is it rough - in the first five minutes, we see a girl's clothes ripped off in plain sight of everyone and a teacher's head bashed in by a student) into a nice, clean place of learning. But his methods aren't exactly orthodox.

Morgan Freeman stars as Clark and he spends most of the movie yelling at people. Most scenes feature Freeman either berating students or teachers, usually with a bull horn in hand. If there's anyone who can pull off non-stop shouting, it's Freeman. I particularly enjoyed one sequence that has Clark screaming at a kid to jump off the roof of the high school, because if he keeps on doing drugs, he'll be dead soon anyway and at least this way is quick and painless. If that's not motivation, I don't know what is.

There's not really much of a story to speak of. Freeman shows up and begins cleaning up the school. That's about it. Much of the film sees Freeman encountering a problem, solving it, and then moving on to the next problem. This is pretty intriguing, up to a point. About halfway through, it became pretty clear that no discernable plot was going to be introduced, which essentially leaves the movie hinging on Freeman's performance. And luckily he is (as always) outstanding, 'cause this could have been a mightily boring movie.

Lean on Me has aged incredibly poorly, though. Filmed in the early '90s and looking every bit as cheesy as an old episode of Beverly Hills 90210, the film is so obviously a part of it's time it's hard to view it critically without thinking about how silly that period was. There's even a montage set to a really bad early '90s pop song, and the edits are in time with the beat!

This is certainly not a bad film, though. Freeman goes for the gusto and pulls it off, but the stylistic choices leave something to be desired. In the end, the whole thing is worth watching if only for Freeman (and maybe for an early appearance by Ethan "Neelix" Phillips as a smarmy lawyer).

One thing I can learn from this movie is people can change. We just have to bear with it. People are different, and what makes them so special. The movie has taught us to be more confident of ourselves, just like what Principle Clark did.

As a TESL student and a teacher to be, I think I have to learn all those skills in order dealing with my future students.

A Great Injustice vs The Merry Maid

A Great Injustice and The Merry maid almost share the same concept of the idea on an abortion. In A Great Injustice, Ah Nya, a woman who got pregnant decided to go for an abortion because she feels embarrassed of herself, and what’s more, she brings the shame to the family. In The Merry Maid, the story is about a couple that gave away their daughter to a Malay family because the child is born out of wedlock. Our motion is “Abortion is illegal and it’s not the only solution for ‘love child’”

In the story A Great Injustice, Ah Nya decided to abort her baby because she knows people around her will talk about her pregnancy. Ah Nya’s father has placed an expectation on Ah Nya that she may also follow the pattern of the society which is getting married and have a family latter. It seems that likewise, so her father is worried regarding the situation.
“Ma, I don’t understand,” said Ah Nya as soon as she hurried home.
“What is it?”
“If society accepts an unmarried father, why does it reject an unmarried mother?” asked Ah Nya.
As we can see, from the conversation between Ah Nya and her mother, she wondered why society treats woman unequally.
“Whatever happens in this world, they always blame the women. If a man dies in bed, the wife is blamed for it. If a man gambles and loses all his money, his wife is also made the scapegoat…”

The Merry Maid has showed us the right way to treat the ‘love child’. They give the baby for adoption. Johan’s family found the baby and this gives future for the baby. Lakshmi gave away her baby because she knew that the baby is innocent, so she wanted to give the best to the baby eventhough it’s not from her. At least, she can make Johan’s family happy and knowing that her daughter safe in a good has is enough for Lakshmi.

In short, there are many ways in dealing with child born out of wedlock. Abortion is not the only solution couples have when they face this problem.

It's Dowry, not Downy!

When we talk about dowry, it is associated with Indian culture where this tradition has been practiced long time ago. The use of dowry is to give an assurance to the bridegroom if anything happens. However, in these two short stories, the dowry is not fairly treated in both stories.

In ‘Everything’s Arranged’, the dowry is wrongly interpreted. Dowry acts as a bribe. When Rukumani is rumored to have an affair with Johnny, a Chinese boy, Rukumani’s father increased the dowry from $10,000 to $20,000. Thus, we can see that the concept of dowry is not as what we understand. It’s more to the bribery.

Next, the story of “A Question of Dowry”. In this story, the dowry needs to be prepared or otherwise the wedding is cancelled. The wedding between Sivasothie and Thiruchelvam is cancelled due to the inability of Mr.Ramachandran’s family to fulfill the dowry requested. It is because Mr.Ramachandran has no more land to sell for buying a gold necklace as a dowry. When Thiruchelvam heard of this matter, he immediately cancels the wedding.

In conclusion, the dowry concepts are not fairly treated in both stories. It is more to bribery and this is so wrong. They must get the concept right and latter, the couple will live happily ever after.

Pigs are not really Pigs.

Animal Farm animated series has helped me to get a clearer picture of the story, and what the story is all about. Eventhough the series are short, but it really helped me to get the gist of the story. The original story is from George Orwell, a famous writer who writes this story in 1945

Animal Farm is about the dictatorship that happened between those animals in the farm. After the major of the animal dies, the pigs took over the throne. The pigs are very powerful party because they rule the farm. There are two characters that are important in this story. One is Napoleon and the other is Snowball. Both are boars that live in the farm. They wanted freedom because they think; the owner of the farm Mr. Jones has been cruel to them. They think that human is useless, and all those animals think that they are treated like slaves. So, with the new ‘government’, they wanted to seek revenge to the human being.

However, Snowball thinks that Napoleon has gone too far and he actually has created seven commandments in order to treat animal equally. Snowball is a great leader, but Napoleon is not. He is lusting for power and this has made Snowball decided to overthrown Napoleon.

‘All animals are equal’. That’s one of the commandments they made in the farm. So, portrayal of human is shown in this story. The old major acts as a revolutionist where he acted to unite all the animals in the farm. So as human. We change for good because we have a great leader. While Snowball is one good example for us to see how a good leader should be. He gathered all the animal and this has bring them into a new move, a clean and more secure position.

In short, we have to be fair and equal to other people. We don’t want to be like Mr. Jones or Napoleon. Be nice to people and we will be treated the same.

Akeelah and the bee

In my opinion, eventhough this movie is actually classified as an ‘educational movie’, I found it very interesting and I really enjoyed watching it. Well, movies were made as tools to entertain people. I thought this movie would be a boring movie as it involves with black community and I thought it would be streets gangster or whatsoever, apparently I was wrong. This movie has its entertainment value and it actually very fun to watch because it’s about something I am not familiar with; spelling bee. How many people can actually spell words just like chewing gum? Akeelah did it and it bedazzled me with words I never heard of!

Of course, the movie taught me how to be more independent and to be hardworking in our life. Akeelah, who is a girl lives with her mother and she lost her father, decided to enter a competition which is people assume she’s not gonna make it. However, with help from her teacher, Mr. Larabee and the support from her family, she has opened people’s eyes to show that she actually can do it as other people, too. I wouldn’t know how she can actually memorise all the bombastic words and prove the society that with ghetto life, she can be a champion. So, basically, this movie acts as one of my inspiration for me to learn more, and of course, to be a better teacher in the future.

I never entered any spelling bee competition before, so I have no experience in the competition. However, this movie reminds me of my secondary teacher named Pn. Nursehah. She always tell me to be a good person and she helped me a lot with my English. I mean, she taught me how to speak well, the pronunciation and the spelling as well. I know her very well and we have become like mother and son. I thanked her for making me a good person and gave me so much confidence in my life. I remembered all the sweet memories I had with her and I wish she had a great life nowadays.

We have to be hardworking to achieve what we want in our life. Akeelah wants to win the national spelling bee competition and she did it. So, basically what I wanna say here, we have to be positive and be realistic to get what we want. We can’t simply hope that everything will be like we planned. It’s not gonna happen. So, despite of having problems in our life, I told myself to be more positive and do what you wanna do. Greatest luck comes with greatest hardship. This is my axiom of life and it is shown in this movie. When you work hard and be sincere in every effort you did, anything that you venture, you will succeed because you deserve it. We are who we are, and we are the one who decide our future.

The dog and its shadow

There are a lot of children stories out there. I have read, listened and watched many stories and all of them are very interesting. I like the story called “The Dog and its shadow”. It has many versions and this has been my favourite story since I was a kid.

There is a dog called Dodo. Dodo lives in the bushes near the park. He doesn’t have many friends because Dodo is a one stuck-up dog. Dodo loves to talk a walk in the park. Sometimes, he got foods from the dustbin and from people’s leftovers. But, Dodo loves bone so much.

One day, Dodo feels so hungry. It’s been two days since got his lunch. Then, Dodo decided to talk a walk to find some foods. Then, Dodo found a bone, a big one. Dodo feels so happy and he planned to go back home. During his walk to getting home, Dodo passes a small bridge. Suddenly, Dodo sees another dog with a bigger bone. Dodo feels that he wanted the bone as well, so he barks at the other dog. Then, the bone at Dodo’s mouth fell to the river. Then Dodo realized that the dog that he saw is actually his shadow. Because of his greediness, Dodo lost his bone and he didn’t get any lunch for the day. Poor Dodo.

So, moral of the story is, don’t be greedy because it will make us lose something. Like Dodo, he wanted to have a bigger bone, and finally, he didn’t get anything. So, besides the moral value that is shown in the story, I can tell that the story is actually a simple yet meaningful story.

The story is relevant until now because we live in a society which leads money and fame to be around us. So, don’t be too greedy and wanted to have everything in this world because we’re not going to have everything.
For this story, I think that it suits for most of the children. It has good moral values in it and I think the children will learn something by reading the story. By learning all these good values, the children will be able to be a good person in the future.

Edwina the Emu

Children should be exposed to the environment where story and tales are lingering around them as they grew up with them. So, one child has said this to me, “when the story begins with ‘once upon a time’, the ending must come with ‘happily ever after’.” So, this shows how much story and tales play a big role in children’s life. Dr. Jaya always has a bright idea to entertain us. So, he came out with children stories. He read two superb stories for all 50 of us. The two stories are “Edwina the Emu” and “The Gruffalo”. Now, here is my personal review of both of the story.

Edwina the Emu is a about a family which they actually got their first eggs after they got married. So, the mother named Edwina, is very worry of her children, decided to get a job in order to make her family’s life better. She asked her husband, Edward to stay at the nest and look for the new eggs. She had gone for many job interviews and she didn’t any jobs at first. She tried her luck by being a ballet dancer and a chimney sweeper. At last, she got a job as a waiter. However, she got mad with the customer because the customer ordered eggs and she thought the customer wanted to eat all her eggs. She quits the job and luckily, all her eggs are safe as well as her husband.

The main character of this story would be Edwina, the mother of the children. She took responsibility to be a breadwinner in her family. She tried so hard to get a job and after a while, she realized that the best job for her is to be a mother. So, she decided to stay at the nest and agree that Edward will get a job.

Sheena Knowles is a genius person. She used a rhythmic way to make sound interesting to attract children to keep their attention. Besides that, the graphic and animation are beautiful and the words choice is simple. This will make the children to comprehend the whole storyline better. I definitely will recommend this book to all parents who have little kids. In addition, Knowles knows that children are very well connected with animals in their life, so, with this kind of story, it’s surely will help kids to read more books in the future.
Yeek Yeek Yeek!

The Gruffalo

When you read the title, you can’t help it but ask yourself what is “The Gruffalo?” Oh dear, it’s a children story! Julia Donaldson has come out with this very interesting story where the title itself will make people wonder, that is actually a Gruffalo? Is it really exists? Well, let me tell you what is “The Gruffalo”
Well, the story is about a clever mouse that had a walk in the jungle. Somewhere (at different points) and somehow during the walk, it came across three preys who were the fox, owl and snake. Afraid of being eaten by these animals, the mouse came out with a story and a creature named the Gruffalo. The mouse said that it wanted to see the Gruffalo and after the mouse described what Gruffalo’s look like, all the animals were scared and they didn’t want to eat the mouse. At the end, the mouse actually meets the creature named The Gruffalo which it taught only in its imagination. The Gruffallo wanted to eat the mouse but the mouse said that it is the scariest animal in the forest. To prove the statement, it brought Gruffallo all along way back and the animals ran away when they saw the Gruffallo. But the Gruffallo doesn’t know that the other animals are afraid of it and not the mouse, so he fled at last.
The main character in this story is the mouse, which can be categorized as tiny, cunning and an intelligent mouse. It told stories to the animals that wanted to eat it and eventually, all those animals didn’t. This tiny little mouse is actually same as the Kancil in the story “Sang Kancil dan Sang Buaya” in Malaysia.
I bet children must like the story because the storyline is simple and easy to understand. A mouse is known as a tiny and helpless creature. So, when the mouse won the ‘battle’ in the jungle so survive, the children will be happy as they imagine that they are same as the mouse, tiny and helpless creature. This masterpiece of Donaldson is very impressing. Her imagination to create The Gruffalo is extraordinary. Not only that, her idea to name as The Gruffalo; a name which never existed is amazing too.
